Following a Health and Fitness Blog

While browsing around for an interesting blog to follow I came across a Health and Fitness blog that I found really appealing. It hits just about every area that you could possibly be looking for. Whether it is health concerns, exercise and nutrition programs, surgery, whatever it is they have information on it. Its a good tool to see what is and what isn't working for and looking up valuable information. Give it a look!

Update on the News Peg!

The progress on the News Peg story is going great, I'm just about ready to start putting it all together. I am writing on veterans who served in Iraq and the emotional/readjusting troubles that face back in civilian life. I interviewed two veterans from Iraq this past week. One stayed on base the whole time working on jets, while the other was a mechanic for the conveys that traveled so he saw more. I talked to Melinda Brokaw today for some information on who might be good to talk to at St. Lukes and she hooked me up with a couple good contacts who would be beneficial in fitting the "expert" requirement of the paper. Well that's the update for now! I'll keep in touch!

News peg update!

Hi all,

I am still working on my news peg story for journalism.  I have got my interview with Coe College athletic trainer Haylee Orman finished.  Now I am preparing some questions for my peer interview.  This should make it easy to go on and write my story in the upcoming days.  Haylee had a lot of good stuff to say about concussions and I learned a ton!

Sports Blogs!

So I'm a pretty big sports fan, so when it comes to following blogs...I follow sports ones. Don't get me wrong, I'm interested in traveling blogs as well as fitness and health blogs, but most of my attention goes to the sports blogs. Currently I am following a blog on the New York Times website called "Bats" which talks about Major League Baseball News. Right now, I haven't read much on it, but once the season starts...which is coming up soon...I have a feeling I will read it, faithfully. I also follow the New York Times blog called "Quad" which keeps me up to date on the current NCAA stories, right now focusing on March Madness. I follow a heath/fitness blog also which has great food recipes as well as tips for exercising. Blogs are great! Quote of the day: "No matter how you feel, get up, dress up, show up! -Maria Shriver Until next time, AJS

Current Project-News Peg Story

I am currently working on a new story!!! It should be really interesting and informational. As many of you know, obesity is a rising problem in the United States. Its an ongoing problem as a result of unhealthy eating and lack of exercise. My main focus is fitness. What are people who aren't involved in athletics doing for exercise? How much exercise is needed per day to stay fit? What are some ways we can motivate individuals to exercise more? What are the health benefits when you are active? Are there certain guidelines you should follow to avoid injuring yourself while exercising? What are the risks of exercising too much? We see infomericals for exercise equipment all the time, what are the most beneficial and least benefical equipment tools? I plan on finding out what Coe students who aren't involved in sports do to stay fit, as well as talk with a fitness trainer and obtain some great information and tips for everyone!

I've already ready stories on a "baby gym," where parents are sending their kids for sports training. Another story that is circulating involves a vibrating platform you stand on and then supposedly, are able to lift more weight and run faster immediately after. A professor at the University of Louisville talks about how a health incident scared her into exercising and now, she has never felt better. According to the American Heart Association, they recommend 150 minutes of moderately intense physical activity and 75 minutes of vigorous traing or resistance training twice a week. And don't forget to stretch! The medicine ball. I'm sure many of you have seen the medicine ball, and it is a great workout accessory. There are many utilizations for the medicine ball and it's fairly inexpensive!

Tip of the day: Run less, Lose more. The way to do this? Interval training. Doing short bursts of speed helps you lose weight faster!

I have a lot more information to share, so be sure to keep coming back for helpful hints to stay fit!

News Peg Story

In my journalism workshop class, we were assigned a news peg story to work on. I decided that I want to write my news peg on the angle of how U.S. soldiers adjust back to life after serving overseas in Iraq. I am planning on interviewing a veteran and get some firsthand insight of his thoughts and experiences on this issue.

News Peg Update-Ben

I am currently working on a news peg story for journalism.  I am researching about concussions and their effect on athletes.  Concussions have became more common in sports especially football.  I have seen how a lot of athletes have been having trouble with concussions in the NFL.  I decided I would like to ask an expert about the reoccurring problem with concussions for athletes.  I am going to interview an athletic trainer at Coe College to learn more about this.  I am excited to learn about how dangerous these concussions could be to an athletes long term health.  I have read about a former NFL player Ted Johnson and how concussions have caused him to go deep into depression.  I also learned that coaches would convince players to practice after having a concussion.  I really want to ask our trainers about concussions in Coe athletes.
