One more year left

It's crazy how fast this year went by. Being a transfer student and this as my first year here, I still vividly remember moving into Coe like it was just the other day. Now I only have one last year until the real world begins. Weird to think about.

Alternative Story is Done

I finished my alternative story up last night. I wrote some information on each of the dorms and got some of the opinions in them from talking to various people who lived in each of the dorms around campus. I realized the thing that seemed to take the most time was actually formatting the story the way I wanted.

What I'm Reading...

Like everyone else in the world, I am staying up to date on the Royal Wedding! I even got up at 3 am to watch it. It was so beautiful. I think it is so interesting that Kate was a commoner and now she is Duchess of Cambridge. Did you know that Prince Charles and Princess Diana were the first ever to kiss on the balcony? Obviously William and Kate followed in their footsteps. It's a beautiful story line and so fun to read about!

Alternative Form Story

My first draft of my alternative form story is done. I talked to John Chandler and he gave me some good information about some of the programs at Coe, as well as some of the standout athletes he has seen since he has been here. I talked about each program and the successes it currently has, as well as potential success. I am revising it now, so once it's done, I'll put it up so everyone can check it out! It's awesome how successful Coe is in athletics!

Alternative Form

Hi All,

Sitting in the library tonight finishing up my alternative form story.  I decided to make a graph about the reasons students chose Coe College.  I am deciding if I want to do a bar graph or a pie chart.  Not sure yet but I'll land on something here soon.

Alternative Story

I am writing my alternative story on dorm rooms and the different characteristics and amenities that each one of them have. I haven't decided yet which format I am going to use but I'm sure that I'll find one that works well with this story.

Revision Extra Credit

For the revision extra credit project I decided to revise my state of the news story and fix up somethings. I have a much more comfortable feel for the introduction with writing the 5 w's as well as the interviewing skills needed in gathering the information that I want. I went back and interviewed some more people that would strengthen the angle that I am going for.

In the news...

Hey everyone-

As you know I am working on my alternative form story, still. Instead of telling you about that though, I thought I would tell everyone what I have been reading in the news lately. The most interesting story I recently read was about the tornadoes that hit St. Louis. A tornado ripped through last Friday evening, even damaging the St. Louis airport. Parts of the airport were destroyed or severly damaged and as many as 750 homes had damage reported. To check out more, visit this website. Tornadoes are dangerous and if you are interested in finding out some helpful tips when a tornado is near you, click here.

Update

Hi all,

I am currently working on my last story of the year!  I am creating an alternative form story for why students choose Coe College over their other top choices.  It's really interesting to talk to everybody and see what their own individual reasoning is.  I am happy with my story topic so far.  I look forward to getting more in-depth with students on their choices here soon.

Currently working on...

Hey everyone-

So, I am currently working on an Alternative Form story. My plan is to do a story about Coe atheltics throughout the years. I plan to do a chart and for each sport, list a major accomplishment of the sport, as well as one standout athlete in each. I have done some research on the Coe athletics website and plan to interview Athletic Director, John Chandler to get his opinions on the some of the "best of the best." I'm excited to do this new form of story and hope everyone will enjoy it!

Until next time,

New Assignment- Alternative Story Form

Hey all- I was browsing some online newspaper websites to find an example of an alternative form story to get some ideas. I came across an interesting story that involves an interactive map. The story was called "An Eye for Retailing." It has four pictures of four different stores' layout of their merchandise (Walmart, Uniqlo, Dollar General and Best Buy). You can click on sound clips that talk about the way the merchandise is set up and the reason for it's layout. It also talks about recent renovations the stores have done to change the set up of their merchandise. It's a really cool interactive article. Check it out! I havent decided for sure what my alternative form story will be out, but I'm thinking I might go through the successes of sports at Coe College. Keep checking my blog for updates! Until next time, AJS

Slide Show Complete

So our latest assignment was "learning and practicing at Coe" in a slide show form. I decided to do the baseball team because eventually, I want to be a sports writer or sports information director. It was a lot of fun! I went to their game last Sunday and it was a great day for some baseball! Click here to see my slideshow! The next project we will be working on is an Alternate Form Story, also known as charticles. I haven't quite decided what I am going to do mine on yet, but I will keep you updated and let you know what my final story of the semester will be on! "Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the future" Until next time, AJS

This Week

Hi all,
Aaron and I are finishing up our slideshow in our journalism class right now.  We got some great shots of the tennis match this sunday afternoon at Coe.  We got some good shots of the guys in action against Luther College.  The only thing we have left to do is make our cutlines fit with our pictures so the slideshow really makes sense to the reader!

New Assignment

Aaron and I are working on our picture slide show right now.  We have chosen to take some pictures of the tennis team on Sunday afternoon.  Tennis should be an exciting sport to capture with film because of the constant actions.  I am excited that we get to do this slideshow and cannot wait to see how our pictures turn out!

Practicing the Rule of Thirds

This past Friday we had a little practice with the camera and some of the photography techniques Professor Nesmith has been teaching us. She's been striving the "rule of thirds" pretty hard among with a couple things such as capturing the emotions and working on the tightness of the picture. Here a few pictures I took that emphasized this.

An Example of Some Action Pictures

We practiced taking pictures in class on April 1st, because that is what we will be doing for our next project. There were several guidelines Jane told us to keep in mind when taking pictures, such as the "one-third rule", as well as the tightness of the picture (whether it is close up or far away). Here are some picturse that I took, just as practice!

Newest Assignment: Slideshow

The latest assignment in my journalism class entails a slideshow. We all chose topics that had to do with "practicing and learning at Coe". There were various options and many sounded interesting. I chose to do a slideshow on the baseball team. Eventually, I would like to be a Sports Information Director, or something that involves sports, so this topic seemed appropriate. I plan to go to a home Coe baseball game on Sunday to capture some awesome action shots! Stay tuned...it should be a fun project! AJS

Update

So I am about in the middle of my news peg story and I decided I will update everybody on how it is going.  I am really enjoying writing this because it's so interesting to me.  I find myself rolling along with this story and I am ready to finish it here pretty soon.  My interview with Haylee Orman is shedding a lot of light on the topic and giving me some great info.

News Peg Update

So I'm still working on my fitness News Peg story. It's a work in progress but I'm finding out some good information that I think readers will find interesting. I have talked to a professional fitness trainer as well as students around Coe College. Being active is important, but it is hard to know what to do when going to the gym. Check out these 35 minute cardio workouts, maybe one will work for you! Hope to have my story done by Sunday so all can check it out! Until next time, AJS
